Mohawk Valley SpotLight: Denise Sachs-Mishalanie: Founder of Whirled Peas

Necessity as the mother of invention also frequently sparks new entrepreneurial ventures and careers. Denise Sachs-Mishalanie discovered such a venture through her friends and family network. The necessity was her family’s desire for the beads and jewelry she makes as well as the need and desire to no longer have to rely on other people for her paycheck and security. A few years ago the company Denise worked for nearly 20 years implemented a layoff that impacted her closest associates and it hit her hard. Denise commented, “I was devastated to lose my partner that way, and I couldn’t wrap my head around what I would do if happened again.” So, the necessity was predefined in two different ways. The need of her family to have more of her beads and the need to be in charge of her own destiny.

Mohawk Valley Spotlight: Lynne Mishalanie & Utica Monday Nite

By PJ MALIN

Like a wizard stepping out from behind a curtain, Lynne Mishalanie and her band, Jazz Garden, made a rare appearance recently on a Utica Monday Nite.
[ Resources: Utica Monday Nite Events CalendarCyberVillage Google Map ]

Mishalanie, the founder-promoter-director-bill payer and so on, for Utica Monday Nite, normally keeps a low profile out of necessity while running the eight-week long extravaganza. But in the glowing sunset on June 8, there was Mishalanie belting out a number of tunes accompanied by her sister, her cousin and several friends who comprise Jazz Garden.

She sang a number of old standards, such as “London Town,” “Lover Man (Where Can You Be?)”, and “Come Rain or Come Shine.” But she was at her irrepressible best when she crooned to Van Morrison’s “Moondance.”

Even if it wasn’t October and the leaves aren’t falling, she couldn’t have picked a more “marvelous” night to bring a mellow crowd to King Street Plaza in front of Thornberry’s Restaurant.

In addition, she unveiled one of her own compositions, “Freefall.”

Mohawk Valley Spotlight – Former NYS Senator Ray Meier

Ask Former New York State Senator Ray Meier what made his job worthwhile and he’ll sound a familiar refrain. People. Not just adults who are old enough to vote, but youngsters who’ve probably never heard of him. Ray Meier believes that people of all walks of life and age groups are ultimately responsible for the direction of the various communities in which they reside and continually urges those people to take a more active role in virtually every area of local and state government as a way to ensure stability, fairness, honesty and responsive government.

A legislative counsel to the late Sen. James Donovan, Meier is no newcomer to the machinations of State government. And upon his election to the Senate in 1996, Meier used his legislative acumen by swiftly co-sponsoring an amendment to the New York State constitution that will compel legislators to pass a budget on time and open the whole process to public scrutiny. Meier is like all public servants who wax positive about lessening the tax burden on taxpayers, especially a heavily burdened populous that has painfully witnessed the loss of thousands of jobs in the ’90s. Despite that gloomy financial analysis, Sen. Meier points to exciting successes that are oftentimes overlooked amidst all the negatives, and envisions the Mohawk Valley Region as a harbinger in technological and, yes, manufacturing industries.

Q: What can you tell me about your background.
A: I was born in Rome. My mom and dad lived in Rome. My family on both sides are fairly recent immigrants. Both sides came to the United States in the late 1890s. My father’s side of the family is German-Swiss, they were farmers. My mother’s side was from Austria, and they came here and settled in the Constable area. My father’s side was in the area around Florence, near Northern Oneida County. They were farmers. And the only reason we wound up in Rome is because we both came from big families and farms can only support so many people; so my mother and my paternal grandfather both wound up in Rome to get employment at Revere Copper and Brass. A lot of people came to Rome and Utica from the farms to get jobs in the Factories.

CyberVillage SpotLight: Peter Corn, Founder-Entrepreneur, Peter’s Cornucopia

As many of you might know, the owner of Peter’s Cornucopia is a gentleman by the name of Peter Corn. It seems like it makes sense, but maybe you didn’t know. We interviewed him for the Central New York CyberVillage SpotLight.

The goal of the SpotLight is to learn more about business and political leaders and what makes them successful in their endeavors. We learned a lot about Peter, his entrepreneurial spirit, his business sense and family.

Peter grew up at 1502 Burrstone Rd. in Utica, NY, with his French-German and Irish-German parents and went to Utica Schools. Peter was at the younger end of seven brothers and sisters. As a teenager, Peter spent a lot of time working for his two brothers-in-law, who were also business owners and entrepreneurs.

CyberVillage Best Bands Contest

We are launching a Best Band contest in CyberVillage. There’s no cash prizes, but the bands get featured throughout the CyberVillage Network which includes CyberVillage SpotLight, CyberVillage TV, and more. Enter your band, or a friends band, by clicking here. We will use Google to determine which bands get the best comments all over the Web. We will also look closely at the bands own sites, FaceBook and MYSpace, to see what comments are made to judge the weekly and quarterly winners. Yearly winners will be judged by the Web community.

Submit your band by going here. A new band will be chosen every week once we kick it off. Bands are judged mostly on how people comment about the bands. We will scour the Web using our advanced Google tools and methods. We will seek comments and find what fans, or people in general, say about your band. We look EVERYPLACE, including your FaceBook and MySpace pages! The number of fans, traffic and professional reviews will NOT be considered. If you have 10 fans in Facebook, or TEN THOUSAND, you have an equal chance of becoming the CyberVillage SpotLight Best Band of the Week.

We will pick three Best Bands per year and ask our CyberVillage members to vote by listening to your bands music to determine the Best Band of the year!

Weekly winners get featured for one month, the three yearly winners get featured for a quarter and the final yearly winner for a year. GOOD LUCK! – Rob :)

  • MV Spotlight Archive – Adirondack Bank & McDonald’s Owner Tom Clark

Q: Tell me about your ties to the Mohawk Valley.
A: Big Moose Lake has a very special spot in my heart. That’s where I enjoy unwinding and thinking. My grandparents had a summer place in the Adirondacks on Big Moose and my parents purchased it when my grandparent passed away. It was then given to my brothers and sisters and myself. From spring to fall I can be at Big Moose lake. It’s about an hour and fifteen minutes from where we’re sitting. Many days in the summer I go to Big Moose and spend the night and come back to work at 9 o’clock in the morning.

Utica College is also very near and dear to my heart. That’s where I went to college and had a wonderful experience. After I graduated from Utica College, I wanted to get an MBA at night from Syracuse University, so I looked for a job locally and there was a job at Marine Midland bank in their training program in 1965. I went to work for Marine Midland, and took graduate courses at night, and then began a long career in the banking business. was with Marine nine years. I left Marine and headed up the Bankers Trust operations. Bankers Trust was moving into the area and had bought a small local bank and was looking to expand to Syracuse. I headed the expansion into Syracuse for them. As a matter of fact, one of the old Bankers Trust branches, Adirondack Bank, which I’m associated with, just opened up in North Utica. … main office of Adirondack Bank is, we actually have two main offices one in Saranac Lake and Utica.

Q: How are you associated with Adirondack Bank?
A: I am chairman of the board, and have made a pretty substantial investment. Of course my main business is McDonalds.

Q: McDonald’s was first, before Adirondack Bank?
A: Yes. In 1978 I left the banking business looking for a business to buy in this area. I had financed the last McDonalds operator, a person by the name of Jim Fotos (sp?) years before when the first McDonalds came into the area. That was when I was with the bank he had sold it back to the company. They thought at one point that they could run the stores better than the operators, but what they found is that the backbone of the McDonalds business is the entrepreneurial spirits of the operators that run the stores, at that point they were looking to sell a number of stores. I knew they were for sale I called Ray Crock{sp?} one thing lead to another and I bought a couple of franchises and it lead to the number I have now which is 19 locations. So basically our territory now covers Herkimer, Old Forge, Rome, all of Utica, Clinton, Camden, Oneida, Canastota, Cazenovia, the three Wall Marts, etc. it’s been a lot of fun it’s a great business and I love it very much. We’re in the Head Quarters of that operation right now in the here in the 15th floor of the Adirondack building.

Q: What was your childhood like?
A: My father was a hard working person and a good role model and I had a wonderful mother who eventually worked with my father in his insurance agency. Great sisters and a brother, a happy family life, very happy remembrances of my childhood. I have nothing but fond memories of the Mohawk Valley region and maybe that’s why I do the kinds of things I do for the various service agencies and whatever in this area.

GENEVA, N.Y.-The Hobart lacrosse team rode suffocating defensive effort and a late scoring surge to a 7-2 victory over 20th-ranked Bucknell at McCooey Field this afternoon. The Bison’s two tallies are the fewest by a Statesmen opponent since Hobart topped Colgate 18-2 in 1992.

Bucknell (1-3) outshot the Statesmen 38-29, but the Hobart defense harassed the Bison shooters all game, limiting the Herd to just 16 shots on goal. Hamilton Defeats Golden Knights

The Golden Knights fell to 6-16 overall and 1-10 in conference games, while Hamilton improved its chances of post-season action by moving to 13-7 and 6-4. Clarkson will take on William Smith in its final road game of the season on Saturday.

In the first half, the Knights were having little difficulty with the Hamilton defense, racing out to a seven-point advantage, 16-9, in the first eight minutes. However, the Continentals would come back to tie the score in the next two minutes. With the two teams jockeying back and forth with made baskets at either end, the game appeared to be headed down to the wire, but Hamilton ended the half with an 11-0 run in the final 5:17 to take a double-digit lead, a margin it would not relinquish for the remainder of the contest.

Three players finished with nine points to lead Clarkson, as Michelle Reddinger (Baldwinsville, NY) contributed 9 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Katie Goldberg (Stowe, VT) and Morgan Carella (Roslyn Heights, NY) each added nine points and Carey Turner (Clifton Park, NY) contributed eight points and five rebounds.

For Hamilton, Sydney Fasulo had a game-high 14 points to go along with 5 rebounds and 4 assists in 21 minutes. Sarah Schrader also produced 12 points and 4 assists for the Continentals.

Griffiss Business Park New Life – Air Force Clean Up Helping Mohawk Valley

2/9/2009 – SAN ANTONIO (AFNS) — The Air Force’s environmental clean-up program is hitting a high-water mark as Environmental Protection Agency officials consider removing more than 2,900 of 3,552 acres at the former Griffiss Air Force Base, N.Y., from the list of potentially hazardous sites.

More 315 News & Resources: Mohawk Valley CyberVillage, New Hartford News, Project Victory Blog, High Tech Gadget Reviews, Utica News Videos, Mohawk Valley Cars, Mohawk Valley Calendar, Best Upstate New York Blogs

After more than two decades and $138 million in clean-up costs, Air Force specialists have successfully remediated many of the potentially hazardous waste sites at the former Strategic Air Command base, making it eligible for removal from the EPA’s National Priorities List. The NPL is a list of hazardous waste sites eligible for remediation funding under the EPA’s Superfund program, established in 1980. The Air Force has 30 sites on the list, including the former Griffiss AFB.

The Griffiss project is only the second Air Force site to be partially delisted since the EPA launched the Superfund cleanup effort. It is also the largest total Air Force acreage delisting since 4,198 acres at Luke AFB, Ariz., were removed from the list in 2002.

“This moment marks a high point for the base, the community and the Air Force,” said Bob Moore, director of the Air Force Real Property Agency here. “The remediation process takes time, money and intense effort by everyone involved. When we’re able to return 2,900 acres to the community without environmental concerns, it makes it all worthwhile.”

Clean-up efforts at Griffiss began before the base was placed on the NPL in 1987. In 2002, the Rome, N.Y., community built a $45 million high school on a portion of the base. The Air Force Research Laboratory Information Directorate and the Northeast Air Defense Sector continue to operate at the base.

In the years since closure, officials with the Griffiss Local Development Corp., and members of the local community have found new uses for parcels of the base, including a hotel, an industrial park and approximately 70 other businesses that employ about 5,600 people.

However, marketing land listed as potentially contaminated is a tough sell. And although Air Force representatives have about 700 acres of property to continue cleaning, the Rome community now has 4.5 square miles of development potential bearing the EPA’s stamp of approval.

Griffiss joins a growing list of clean-up success stories for the Air Force. Only 30 of the 1,255 sites on the priorities list are Air Force locations. To date, Air Force efforts have resulted in three installations coming off the list: Luke, Twin Cities Air Reserve Base, Minn.; and a parcel of land on McChord AFB, Wash. Ellsworth AFB, S.D., was partially delisted in 2000.

The Air Force Real Property Agency is responsible for remediation and property transfer at 40 former Air Force installations throughout the U.S. under the Base Realignment and Closure program. At the height of the BRAC process, AFRPA representatives managed 87,000 acres, or about 137 square miles of property.

In the two decades since the first BRAC in 1988, agency officials have transferred 86 percent, or more than 116 square miles of land — twice the area of Washington, D.C. — back to communities for public use. Throughout the transfer process, Air Force leaders remain committed to protecting human health and the environment.

Rome NY – So You’re Going to London

From Below: “We left our log cabin located just outside of Rome, NY on a blustery late December day, waving goodbye sadly to family, friends and pets. But we knew it was an adventure of a lifetime.”

So you’re going over to London – and taking your grandkids? Some might tell you to think twice about that. Why not go over by yourselves, they might ask? You do know that the British think more of their dogs than they do of children, don’t you?

Fear not. I spent several months in London with three children, ages 7, 9 and 15 and there was never a dull moment. Granted, some neighbours might frown upon your kids chalking up the sidewalk in front of the house for a game of hopscotch, and you might get a few Londoners to glance askew at your group if you get too noisy riding on the “tube,” but your grandkids will love London!

We left our log cabin located just outside of Rome, NY on a blustery late December day, waving goodbye sadly to family, friends and pets. But we knew it was an adventure of a lifetime.

In the next few articles, I’ll be giving you some tips about taking youngsters on what I might call a “multigenerational vacation.”

Now, if you have small grandchildren, you know that it’s fairly easy to entertain them no matter where they are. You’ll want to bring along a perhaps a backpack for small fry, rather than strollers.

We found that things on wheels like strollers were cumbersome. They took up too much room on the London buses (which the conductor wasn’t shy to tell us about). And when we tried to wheel our way through the throngs as they swept toward an underground train in station, we learned to travel light and to walk with a quick step.
And don’t be afraid of getting lost or of walking on London streets. You will rarely, if

Let’s say you’re visiting London for five days with your grandchildren who are somewhat beyond the “rugrat” age range. You want to enjoy your visit yourself, but you also want your grandkids to have fun.

I don’t know about you, but some of us (myself included), can only deal with “museums” for just so long. In fact, I’ve come to cringe even at hearing the word, “museum.” I think I learned that from my own kids when we went traveleing with them. So the first thing you could do, because some of the – ahem – museums in London are terrific and your grandkids will love them – is to perhaps change the names a bit.

Let’s see – OK, for example – instead of telling the kids that you’re thinking of visiting the Victoria and Albert Museum – to which news they will groan and twist their bodies in agony – why not say you’re thinking that today would be a good day to stop by the Victoria and Albert Pantechnicon? Before they figure out that a Pantechnicon has nothing to do with Star Wars, you’ll be inside.

But perhaps you’ve found, as I have, that conning others ends up blowing up in your face. My suggestion is that you sit down and talk honestly as a family group about what you’ll do during your London visit.

If you have something wonderful planned, or simply fun that each person can look forward to, your family members will be much more willing to partake in activities that aren’t exactly to their liking. It’s a win-win situation. Everyone wins. Some of the time.

Everyone needs to agree to the itinerary and to the notion that no one will grumble about events they don’t care too much about. If each day is planned well, you’ll have a brilliant time together without anyone feeling overly burdened, bored, or stifled.

Mix things up a bit and don’t be afraid to go from one end of London to another for two activities. It’s easy to get around in London using their superb underground system and the traditional London buses. The ride itself on the bus or tube will be fun and educational, as long as that’s the mindset of your group. And Grandparents, as well as Mom and Dad, can set the tone to make sure that it is just that.

Here’s a five-day itinerary that should give you a good taste of London, allowing the adults in your group to feel that they’ve really visited the city of all cities, and given the children the fun breaks that all of us need, no matter what the age.

    Preliminaries:
Want to start out on a fun note for the kids – and some luxury for yourself? How about booking a room at a hotel with a “resident ghost?” In other words, the place is haunted! Right in London, there are two hotels (five-star, mind you) that qualify as “haunted”:

    The Dorchester
    Park Lane, London W1A 2HJ.
(In the western section of London, on the Piccadilly Line, Consistently ranked one of the world’s best. This opulent 1931 hotel offers the friendliest, almost “telepathic” levels of service (see? What did I tell you?), an outstanding choice of restaurants and a glorious Spa.

Behind the grand Art Deco exterior, bedrooms in a traditional English Country House style provide every comfort and luxury. Superbly located opposite Hyde Park.

    Tel Toll Free in USA: 1 800 727 9820

    Grosvenor
    Park Lane, London W1A 3AA.
The Hotel stands on the original site of Old Grosvenor House which was Richard the Earl of Grosvenor’s 18th Century private residence. This place has got to have footsteps echoing in the dead of the night! Telephone +44 1 71 499 6363.

Of course, for family bedtime reading, you’ll want to have some wonderful ghost stories for the children to make it a little more fun and enchanting. Try “The Banshee Train” by Odds Bodkin. A person with a name like that just has to be able write a scary story, no?

Then there’s the “Christmas Ghost Story” by Nick Demartino. Or, you might choose “The Berenstain Bears in Maniac Mansion” (Berenstain Bears Big Chapter Books) by Stan and Jan Berenstain.

One that is being touted as a great story for young adults and all ages, is “For Mike,” written by Shelly Sykes. Better yet, make up your own scary stories! Light some candles, or hold a flashlight under your chin for a great spooky effect, put your p.j.’s on and sit around together in your hotel room. Each person takes a turn adding a few lines to the story.

Keep a pen and paper handy! These stories are often “classics” that your grandkids will love as much as their parents did years before. Be sure you write them down so you can remember them later on! Of course, grandparents and parents must use their own discretion regarding scary stories. Small children could be too frightened by inappropriate things. You don’t want nightmares that will keep Mom and Dad up half the night (because you’ll be in another room down the hall!) and not able to get around London Town the next day!

    Tip

When you arrive in London, the first thing you might want to do after you go to a money exchange, is buy some London underground postcards for all reading members of your group. These only cost about 40p and can be carried around and referred to easily.

If you know what tube stop is near the activity you are heading to, you can quickly figure out your route. It is cheaper than buying a map and will make you look less of a tourist (but rarely less like an American!)

The Official End of Print Media?

Indian Country Today Adapting in Tough Times. The current economic downturn is adding turmoil to a media industry already challenged by the changing news appetite of the people around the world. No longer is the 6 p.m. TV newscast or the morning newspaper the main consumption of choice. Today’s consumer—especially young people brought up on surfing the Web and cell phones—want unpackaged news when they want it and how they want it.

An April 2008 article in a blog on newsosaur.com reported that newspaper circulation “has fallen back to pre-Baby Boom levels” even while the number of people in America has doubled. On the other hand, a Dec. 23 article in Editor & Publisher stated that the Web sites for several of the country’s biggest papers posted “big year-over-year gains” in unique visits—including the nytimes.com (10 percent), washingtonpost.com (17 percent) and latimes.com (143 percent).
For Randi Rourke, an editor at Indian Country Today (ICT), the biggest concern in this time of tighter than ever budgets is “making sure we can get to the news.” She added, “ICT is known for its original content and for the in-depth coverage our readers want.”
Rourke noted that much of the turbulence in media today has not hit ICT. “We are a niche publication and we have a loyal, core audience of regular readers. Though we haven’t lost readers, we do need to scrutinize everything we do in a way we never had to before.” She went on to say that the job cutbacks experienced by the mainstream media actually left ICT with a greater selection of talented writers who now want to write for ICT on a part-time basis.

Rourke’s colleague on the business side, Pete Wiezalis, director of marketing for the Oneida Nation’s Four Directions Media group (of which ICT is a part), says that the solution to this new reality is for ICT “to have a news product for any kind of user, accessing from any device in any medium.” He noted that ICT delivers the news in many formats—from the traditional hard copy of the national weekly paper to RSS feeds, a web 2.0- interactive website (www.indiancountrytoday.com ) with 23,000 unique visitors a week, a digital version as a pdf and audio programs, as well as posting news on Twitter, Facebook and MySpace.

2008 advertising revenues and profits are down for many media outlets, including even the New York Times which experienced a 16 percent drop in ad revenue in December and a 48 percent drop in profits for the fourth quarter. Responding to the loss of revenue and changing news appetites of consumers, media outlets are adapting by shrinking the news staff and focusing more and more of their news coverage to their website—where ad rates are much lower.

When it comes to the revenue side of the equation, Wiezalis said that ICT has the same challenges as other media outlets between print ads and web ads, namely “its dollars to dimes.” As a niche media company, ICT has seen only a small drop in ad revenues year over year. Wiezalis went on to say that they are re-scrutinizing marketing initiatives and then moving money toward initiatives with a greater return on investment, while always balancing “effective journalism and business strategies that can maintain it.”

Indian Country Today, a national multimedia publisher, is located in Canastota, N.Y. and has a bureau in Washington, D.C. ICT is a part of the Oneida Nation’s Four Directions Media group, which also includes Four Directions Productions, a 3D animation, HD cinematography studio; Standing Stone records; First Allies Living History production company; and Four Directions Talent, a clearinghouse for American Indian artists interested in the film and television industry.

    ECR Freewatt Home Heating System

Utica, NY (PRWEB) February 6, 2009 – The future of home energy has arrived with the freewatt® home heating system. Manufactured by ECR, freewatt is the green alternative in home heating, allowing homeowners to reduce their carbon footprint without sacrificing comfort.

    freewatt micro-CHP warm air system

freewatt operates using micro-combined heat and power (micro-CHP) technology, which marries an ENERGY STAR-rated, high-efficiency gas furnace or boiler to a Honda generator.

“freewatt is designed to operate whenever the home has a need for heat,” said Michael Paparone, ECR president and CEO. “Using the Honda generator, freewatt generates 1.2 kilowatts of electric power and nearly all the heat created by the generator is then recycled to heat the home. This electricity can be used to power the home or can be sold back to the ‘grid.’”

“Unlike a traditional home heating system, freewatt can produce nearly 5,000 kilowatts of electricity each year, which reduces your carbon footprint by up to 6,000 pounds,” Paparone said. “For example, using freewatt for one year is the equivalent to not driving your car for six months.”

By installing a freewatt system, a home’s value can increase from anywhere between $5,000 and $20,000. Additionally, freewatt can be easily installed by certified freewatt professionals in both new and existing construction as either the full system or the “freewatt ready” system. Utilizing freewatt may also help residential projects qualify for points under the LEED for Homes Rating System.
